Shawn Hill - JV & Varsity Boys Head Coach
Coach Hill led both the South Charlotte Thunder Boys JV & Varsity teams to NCHEAC state championships in the 2017-18 season and was named the NCHEAC Western Conference Coach of the Year. Born in Knoxville, Tennessee, Coach Hill played three years of varsity basketball at South Young High School. He then proceeded to play four years of college basketball – two years at Walters State Community College in Morristown, TN and two years at Bryan College in Dayton, TN. Before coaching the South Charotte Thunder, he coached high school basketball (Damascus Christian Academy) for 9 years and several years at various levels of youth recreational/church leagues. He and his wife, Shannon, have been married for 18 years. They have 3 children – Avery (15 yrs.), Aaron (13), and Addison (10) whom they homeschool. Coach Hill is a teacher/tutor who teaches various classes and administers standardized testing for homeschooled students.
Bobby Jones - Varsity Boys Assistant Coach
Coach Jones focuses on assisting with practices and player development with the Thunder. A native of Charlotte, Coach Jones played for Coach Dean E. Smith at the University of North Carolina. As the 5th overall pick in the 1974 NBA draft, he had an illustrious professional career with the Denver Nuggets and Philadelphia 76ers. Playing alongside "Dr. J." (Julius Erving), the 76ers won the 1983 NBA championship, defeating the Los Angeles Lakers in a sweep (4-0). During his professional career, Coach Jones was a 4 time NBA All-Star, named to the NBA All-Defensive Team 9 times, and won the 1983 NBA 6th Man of the Year award. After his retirement in 1986, the Philadelphia 76ers retired his number (#24) where it hangs in the rafters with others like Wilt Chamberlain (#13), Julius Erving (#6), Maurice Cheeks (#10), and Charles Barkley (#34).
